Sleep Disorders - Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is a sleep disorder caused by an urge to move the legs. This is due to the legs feeling uncomfortable, and the movement makes them feel better temporarily. The jerky movements in the legs, feet and toes can also occur while you are trying to fall asleep.

It can also occur while you are asleep, causing you to wake up. This can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Periodic limb movement disorder is another condition that most people with restless leg syndrome suffer from, and it involves involuntary limb movements while awake or asleep.

There are effective treatments for both restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement, and they include:

-exercise such as walking and jogging

-wrapping legs in bandages, stockings or pantyhose

-taking iron supplements

-reducing intake of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine

-maintaining a regular sleep schedule

-doing stretches for legs, knees and ankles

-massaging the legs

-relaxating with yoga, meditation or other exercises

-applying heat or cold to the legs

-lying on your side with pillow between the knees
