Toddlers - Learning
The best way for toddlers to learn is through observation and unstructured play. You should not be pushing your child to learn to read or count at this age. There is no evidence that starting to teach these things at a younger age will give your child any advantages.
By observing you and his or her siblings and playmates, your toddler will learn the basic communication skills necessary to set a solid foundation for the rest of his or her life. Learning how to share, cooperate, be polite, express one's emotions and desires, empathize, etc. are all very important things for a toddler.
Your toddler will pick up language skills be listening and copying. If you don't want your child to say swear words, then don't say them or watch them on TV when he or she is within earshot. Always speak to your toddler in full sentences and this will help build language skills. Another way to build language skills and to instill a love for books is to read to your child at least once a day.
By playing with basic objects such as balls and blocks, your child can learn a lot. There is no need for expensive, fancy educational toys or software. Just the basics is all a toddler needs to learn and develop to their full potential. Be sure to engage your child and play interactive games like paddy cake. Also make sure that once your toddler is over the age of 2 that there is plenty of opportunity to socialize with other toddlers.
