Diagnosis and Tests

If you have involuntary leakage of urine from your bladder on a regular basis, then you have urinary incontinence.

There are many tests to determine the cause of urinary incontinence in men. These include:

-urinalysis or urine culture sample to determine whether there is a urinary tract infection or prostatitis that is causing the problem, or whether there is blood sugar present in the urine

-cough test to determine if there is leakage during stress events

-urodynamic testing to look for interrupted or hesitant urine flow, to measure the volume of urine after urination, and determine how much urine causes you to feel the need to urinate. This type of testing can include:

-uroflowmetry, which measures the rate of urine flow while urinating.

-pressure flow studies that measure the pressure in the bladder as urine flow changes, which helps determine if the cause is an obstruction or a weak bladder.

-residual urine determination which measures post-void residual using a thin tube instered into the bladder or an ultrasound after urination

-cystometrogram tests are used to determine the bladder's ability to store and release urine.

-Electromyogram tests are used to record electrical activity of urinary muscles.

-A cystoscopic exam can be used to see inside the urinary tract.

-A cystourethrogram is an x-ray taken of the bladder and urethra during urination
