Foods to Eat for Better Sleep

Foods to Eat for Better Sleep

Due to a variety of factors, many people these days have difficulty getting a good night's sleep. Doctors recommend between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per night, but many of us fall short of that mark, or the quality of sleep we get is not good. While there are sleep medications, many people don't respond to them, or feel out of it the next day. Thankfully, there are certain foods that can help you get a better night's sleep without having to resort to medication.

Here is a list of foods that can help you get more and better quality sleep:

-nonfat popcorn without butter will boost serotonin helping you to feel relaxed

-oatmeal with sliced banana will boost melatonin levels which promotes sleep

-try eating one cup of yogurt with some chopped nuts (lysine and arginine) to get stress levels down, but eat it at mid day

-sesame seeds are a great source of tryptophan, which induces sleep

-pretzels are a healthy source of carbohydrates that help induce sleep, but try to stick to the low salt variety

-one glass of wine will relax you helping you get to sleep, but any more than that will reverse the effect

-try drinking one glass of unsweetened cherry juice one hour before bed to boost relaxing serotonin levels

-red bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C, which can suppress the hormone cortisol, making you feel less stressed
