10 Ways to Improve Cholesterol Levels

There are two kinds of cholesterol: LDL, which is the bad kind and HDL, which is the good kind. So everyone should aim to reduce LDL cholesterol while boosting HDL cholesterol. Here are 10 ways to do this.

1. Take statin

Statin can lower LDL by 10 percent to 55 percent, depending on the dose. Statin usually increases HDL by 5 to 10 percent as well. Sometimes other medications are used in combination with statin to improve outcomes.

2. Take a cholesterol absorption inhibitor

This is a good option for those who can't take statin due to side effects. This can reduce LDL by 15 to 20 percent and raise HDL by up to 5 percent.

3. Take a bile acid sequestrant

This can reduce LDL by 10 to 20 percent. Combining this with statin can produce much better results. These drugs also benefit diabetics by lowering blood glucose levels.

4. Take nicotinic acid

This is a B vitamin that lowers LDL by 10 to 20 percent and also boosts HDL significantly (up to 35 percent). This is the best way to boost HDL.

5. Take fibrates

Fibrates also lower LDL and boost HDL.

6. Lose weight

Weight loss can lower LDL, but it will only stay down if you maintain healthy diet changes. Reducing fat can also boost HDL.

7. Reduce saturated fats.

Although saturated fats can boost HDL, it also raises LDL, which is bad. Reduction of saturated fats will reduce LDL.

8. Cut out trans fats

Trans fats are very bad for you and increase LDL while lowering HDL. It is best to avoid them entirely.

9. Moderate alcohol consumption

HDL can be increased with moderate drinking.

10. Quit smoking

Smoking decreases HDL levels.
