Herbal products and the environment

With so many serious environmental problems that world faces, most consumers now understand the need to go green and leave the status quo behind. One of the best green living tips is to use herbal products instead of chemical products.

The chemical revolution of the past century has resulted in the release of thousands of new chemicals into the environment. The problem is that we tend to use these chemicals without testing them for health effects thoroughly enough first. For example, Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that up until recently was widely used in plastics, including baby bottles and the liner used in tin food cans, is now recognized as a dangerous chemical.

Similarly, DDT, a pesticide that was used on many food crops in the United States, is now banned since it was found to be a serious health threat. However, some countries continue to use this pesticide and sometimes residues can be found on foods imported into America and other Western countries.

Our waterways are also becoming polluted by the chemicals that we ingest or use on our bodies. The chemicals found in our foods, medicines, and beauty care products often make their way into the sewage system, and then go on to pollute the marine environment. Scientists have found high levels of antidepressants and estrogen mimicking chemicals in our water. In addition, extremely dangerous substances, such as dioxins can pollute the environment, just as a result of us doing something as basic as brushing our teeth.

The point is that we often invent chemicals and introduce them to the market without ensuring that these chemicals are safe. Once these chemicals make their way into the environment, they can combine with each other and we may ingest them unwittingly endangering our health. Nobody knows how all of these chemicals may interact together and what effect they may have on human health.

Herbal products may offer a safer alternative to chemicals, both for you and for the environment. While you should always consult a doctor before using any health or beauty related product, you will likely find that herbal products are milder than chemical based pharmaceutical and beauty products.

Herbal products don’t contain toxins, and so when they pass through your system, or wash off of your body, they won’t contaminate or pollute the environment. They are composed entirely of natural components, and completely biodegradable. In addition, some herbal products such as colon cleansers may be able to cleanse certain toxins from our bodies that have accumulated over the years.

So next time you are making the choice between a chemical product or an herbal product, whether it be for hair care, skin care, nail fungus, or something else, think about the impact on the environment, and discuss the options with your doctor. Now is the time to go green, and herbal products can help you do it.
