Pumpkin Protein May Prevent Yeast Infections

Thursday, December 10, 2009

A new study suggests that pumpkin protein could help fight off yeast infections. The study looked at several germs including Candida albicans which causes yeast infections.

Scientists found that the protein Pr-2 found in pumpkin rind helped to prevent the growth of C. albicans without damaging cells. This means that Pr-2 could be used as a natural treatment for yeast infections.

One in three women suffer from yeast infections at some time in their life. Yeast infections can be caused by the use of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and steroids. They also commonly affect women who are pregnant, have diabetes or are post-menopausal. Other natural treatments for yeast infections include probiotics and tea tree oil.
