Reducing Sodium in the Diet Key to Improving Health

Monday, September 14, 2009

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal reports that reducing sodium intake should be a top public health priority. Too much sodium in the diet is associated with a slew of health problems such as high blood pressure, vascular and cardiac damage, stomach cancer, osteoporosis and several other conditions. High blood pressure can also lead to cardiovascular disease.

In developed countries, almost 80 percent of sodium intake is from processed foods. Currently, the average daily sodium intake is more than double the highest recommended level.

This is why it is suggested that the food industry be more regulated, but voluntary changes in eating habits will also be required. The government should act by regulating the processed food industry, educating consumers, and requiring more informative labeling. Health care professionals should also direct patients towards lower sodium diets.
