How to give yourself CPR

If you ever have a heart attack, there is a good chance you will be alone when it happens, so if you aren't carrying a defibrillator, it helps to know how to perform CPR on yourself.

If your heart starts beating irregularly you may only have a few seconds to act before you lose consciousness. The thing to do is to take a deep breath and force yourself to cough. The cough should be intense and prolonged. You should do this over and over again, about every two second until medical assistance arrives or the heart returns to normal.

The deep breaths help by moving oxygen into the lungs and the coughing helps by squeezing the heart to keep the blood flowing. The pressure on the heart also helps it to get back its normal rhythm.
