The Root Causes of Stretch Marks
What Causes Stretch Marks?
And what can you do about it?
More than 80% of women get stretch marks to some degree during pregnancy. They tend to first appear during the 6th or 7th month of pregnancy, usually during the third trimester. They can range from being barely noticeable to large creases and red and white marks in the skin. Unfortunately, they don't go away after pregnancy.
Any type of rapid weight gain can also cause stretch marks. Rapidly growing teens and body builders are also susceptible to stretch marks.
So what are the root causes stretch marks? They are caused when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking down. It's like an elastic that loses its elasticity. The stretching of the skin leads to the breakdown of tissue fibers.
Hormonal changes due to prolonged steroid use, Cushing's syndrome or pregnancy can also cause stretch marks. As the skin loses its elastin and collagen, the stretch marks form. Stretch marks are actually a type of scar visible in the top layer of skin.
Stretch marks can develop on any part of the body, but most often occur where there is the most stored fat and parts of the body most likely to stretch. This is mostly the breasts, abdomen and buttocks, but also includes thighs and upper arms.
Although they do not pose any health risk, stretch marks are unsightly and embarrassing for most people, especially if they are very noticeable. So what can you do about stretch marks? There are many rumors out there about what works and what doesn't. Some claim that cocoa butter works, but there is no proof. There is however one natural remedy that seems to work very well.
