Weight Control While Quitting Smoking is a Good Idea

According to a new meta-analysis, women who try to quit smoking while getting treatment for weight control are able to control their weight gain and are more likely to quit smoking. Up until now, it was believed that one could not deal with both health problems at the same time, because of the tendency to gain weight when quitting smoking.

The findings indicate that dieting while trying to quit smoking resulted in about a 29 percent greater chance to quit smoking over the short term (from 6 to 14 months) compared to those who did not try to diet while quitting.

The women who tried to control weight while quitting smoking also did not gain as much weight as those who did not. They gained on average 2.1 pounds less in the short term and 2.5 pounds less in the long term.

The study suggests that women should attempt to control weight while quitting smoking, but more research is needed to determine the long term results.
