What Causes Heartburn?
There are many causes of heartburn besides the well known hot foods and chocolate. The following is a list of other causes of heartburn.
1. Smoking: Smoking worsens GERD.
2. Pills: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can cause heartburn. So can antibiotics, calcium channel blockers, sedatives, osteoporosis drugs and bronchodilators.
3. Fish oil supplements: The fish is fine, but the oil can contribute to heartburn.
4. Stress: Stress is associated with heartburn, but it may be due to the fact that stressed out people are more aware of and sensitive to symptoms.
5. Peppermint: Peppermint can aggravate heartburn.
6. Excess weight: Being overweight contributes to heartburn.
7. Genetics: If you are unlucky, you have inherited a predilection for heartburn.
